I was in a romantic relationship for two years with a girl I deeply loved and gave everything I could to. We're both 20 years old. But the problem is that I’m a U.S. citizen, and she isn’t.

After Trump became president and ICE started its deportation campaigns, her father got tired of the situation — low-paying jobs and constant fear — so he decided to return to his country.

That meant she would be left alone here. So her father, along with others, advised her to marry someone just for the sake of getting legal status.

I’m 21 and not financially stable enough to sponsor her for a marriage-based green card.

So who offered to marry her? A co-worker of hers. He offered to do it, but then he started flirting with her. He called her “love” and once told her, “I don’t care if you have a boyfriend.” She didn’t reject him — because he seemed like the only option at the time.

Everything was going smoothly until the priest(religious guy who prays for her, and she takes his words so serious) her that if she didn’t cut me off, the government could find out the marriage is fake — and that would be really dangerous.

She accepted it, despite how painful it was, and we separated.

But just one day after our breakup, that guy told her he had feelings for her. She was disappointed but tried to ignore it. Over time, they grew very close — he would visit her house daily, spend time with her family, and they’d go out together. To her, it was just friendship.

But later, he started speaking to her in a sexual way and even tried to kiss her.

At that point, she decided to stop everything — scared of deportation and everything happening.

Two days ago, the pastor called her again and told her that if she didn’t start the legal process immediately, she would be deported — and that she had to leave me. If she wanted me to stay in her life, I could only be her friend, and the marriage with the other guy must be purely legal, just for the papers. He told her to act fast, or deportation would be certain.

Now, I’m trying to set aside my feelings and just see her as a friend.

But two nights ago, she messaged me in the middle of the night, begging me not to leave her — asking me to at least stay as her friend.

And sadly, I’m in a really tough position. I can’t ask anyone for help, because if the wrong person finds out, it could be dangerous for her — since a marriage just for papers is illegal.
